What's The Soup Today?
What's the soup today?
My mom and sister; with my niece in tow,
would always ask this question upon sitting at their favourite table.
That particular day it was creamy leek and potato, but before I could
get all of the words out my sister was giving me the look.
Creamy leek?
said Wendy Aunt Tammy, Maggie doesn't like
potatoes.
This all said with her nose wrinkled and eyes wide in stare down
mode as if to warn me of an onset of tears and obvious disappointment
from her three-year-old seated at the table. As usual, Maggie's boots
had been shucked and her tights dangled from tiny toes. I looked into
the large innocent blue eyes and said:Yes, it's creamy leek soup,
would you like a Maggie special?
She nodded. I served her the Maggie Special: soup in a little
cup with mandarin oranges and apple slices with sugar and cinnamon on
the side. With a few moments, she had all but licked the bowl clean. It
was my pleasure to tell her that she just ate potatoes. The look on
her face was priceless. Looking at her mom she said, Only here mom.
I'm not eating them at home. Only at Aunt Tammy's, K?
